A Successful Passage
After scores of failed attempts over the centuries, Roald Amundsen, a Norwegian explorer, successfully navigated the Northwest Passage between 1903 and 1906. He succeeded where others had failed by taking a small crew on a converted herring boat. His ship’s shallow draught allowed him to navigate extremely shallow waterways, some as little as three feet.
In recent years with the dramatic reduction in sea ice, travel through the Canadian Artic Archipelago is now possible for cargo ships.
