Much Remains to Be Done
In 2016, pieces of instructional programs established in the late 60s and early 70s remain in Comparative Ethnic Studies and related fields. Still, racism persists and likely will for some time. So… did anything make a real difference? As President Terrell writes in 1970, “much remains to be done.” The racial activism of the 1960s likely enabled the activism based on sexual identity in more recent years. Racial activism continues as evidenced by the Black Lives Matter movement. As one of the protesters later said, looking backwards from the late 1980s, “involvement is a good teacher." Students, faculty, staff, the public from all sides stood up for what they believed. Although it was often tense, in the end, the university improved because of their activism.
