Fuller completes letter 1 by telling his wife that he believes that Mr. Brooks is actually her Uncle Abijah. Fuller goes on to tell her that if she ever receives the dictionary and never sees him again, she should communicate his thanks to Mr. Brooks.

I had thought it was his Son your Cousin, but I believe him to be your Uncle, if you ever receive this and do not see me again communicate my thanks to them, as you may be left alone or nearly so, it may be well for you to ascertain all about [it?].
