Pingstone was specially commissioned by the Oregon Railway and Navigation Company to make a reconnoissance of the Columbia River, from the neighborhood of Fort Colville to Ainsworth, and report on the navigability for steamboats. Accompanied by two Indians, the journey (of 427 miles) was performed, in a birch bark canoe, in nine days."
