1 map : col ; 57 x 37 cm.<br>Map shows street railroads and railroads<br>Scanned from: Davis' new commercial encyclopedia : Washington, Oregon and Idaho, the Pacific Northwest. <br>Portland was first settled in 1843, and was named, by coin flip, in 1845 (had the coin flip been lost, Portland, OR would now be Boston, OR). In 1883, when the transcontinental railroad connected the northwest, via Portland, to the rest of the United States, Portland's future was assured. The railroad's arrival changed Portland from a seedy waterfront town to a thriving lumber center.
